The finder window toolbar that comes with Panther looks like this:

Apple provides a handful of tools which you can add to the toolbar with these steps:
1. Control click in a blank area in the toolbar, and you'll get a menu like this:
2. Click on "Customize Toolbar
" (the last item) and you'll see a palette like this:
3. As stated in the palette, "Drag your favorite items into the toolbar
" and the tool will be there in all finder windows you subsequently open. This is my modified toolbar:

4. There are a few more points:
Don't be concerned that you might add too many tools; if you exceed the available space, either by adding tons of tools or by shrinking the window, Panther will display those icons which will fit, and indicate the presence of additional icons with the double chevron (»), which you can click on to select the tool.

5. If the tool, application, or document you want to add isn't shown in the palette, it's not a problem. Using the Finder's Go menu, open the folder which contains your object (you can do this while the palette is still visible; it will open in a new window.) Drag the object from the folder to the toolbar, and then click on Done in the palette.
6. To remove an item from the toolbar, there are two methods:
a. With the palette displayed, drag the icon out of the toolbar. You'll see the "Poof!" as it disappears, just as you do with objects in the Dock.
b. At any time, you can Control-Click the icon, and select Remove Item.
7. Using the icons: If the icon you dragged to the toolbar represents an application, then just like the application icons in the Dock, you can drag a document to it to open the document.
